What do you stand for?

Controversy is in the air.

“What Do You Stand For” is a campaign Kenneth Cole started to ask people their opinion on hot-topics such as gay marriage, abortion, gun control and war.
“It might alienate people. It might turn people off from his brand, but that’s the point. Maybe he doesn’t want those people buying his clothes,” Fashionista.com executive editor Leah Chernikoff told FoxNews.com.
The website has a split screen where you can simply continue through the site to shop for shoes, or click on one of the tabs to further be asked more questions like “Is prejudice against same-sex marrieage a form of minority discrimination?” and “Are anti-war protests unpatriotic?”
Pro-life advocates say their opposition comes not because of the in-your-face pro-choice agenda, but because of how Cole makes light of the issue. Cole compares the decision of a woman making the decision of getting an abortion to choosing which handbag to buy.
Some fashion insiders believe Cole uses controversy to survive in a down market. It is like the saying “Any publicity is good publicity,” at least he is getting people talking.
I am not sure whether or not I agree with this campaign, but Cole isn’t putting his own opinion out there, he is simply trying to get people to address issues that most people try to avoid. I salute his riskiness in this campaign and I enjoy the controversy.
